The Luke Sawyer Legacy Fund was established in 2016 to honor the memory of Luke Sawyer, an OBX Storm player on the U9 Sol team who tragically died in January of 2016 while on his way to one of his team’s practices. The initial amounts set aside in this fund came from donations made to OBX Storm in memory of Luke Sawyer. The fund will exist until all amounts accumulated have been awarded.
The family of Luke felt there was a need for assistance for players on existing OBX Storm teams or a member of the Storm Academy to offset costs associated with playing for OBX Storm. Costs such as uniforms, tournament travel expenses, cleats and other pre-approved expenses will be eligible for reimbursement for players awarded scholarships under this fund.
Players or families who are interested in applying for awards from this fund should fill out the scholarship application available below and indicate that they are applying for the Luke Sawyer Legacy Fund. Those applications should be given to the coach, Director of the Academy, Director of Coaching or a Board member. Each season, up to three recipients will be chosen to receive a scholarship for a dollar amount that will go towards reimbursement of expenses that have been preapproved up to the awarded amount. There will also be an award pool that will be set aside for players who have not been awarded a scholarship but have a need that the Board feels warrants assisting. Awards from the award pool will be on a first come, first serve basis and are limited to those who have not previously received assistance under the Luke Sawyer Legacy Fund as a season scholarship recipient. Awards from the pool will not exceed $100.
